How to Fix Remote Control Toys

Remote or radio controlled toys are often a must-have on a child's wish list. These toys can also be some of the most expensive gifts. So, when your child's favorite car or much-loved aircraft suddenly stops working, the last thing you want to do is throw it in the garbage. Before you decide to trash the toy and fork out cash on a replacement, though, try some troubleshooting. You might just get it up and running again.

Things You'll Need

  • Batteries
  • Small tools, such as an eyeglass repair kit and tweezers
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Electrical tape
  • Scissors
  • Magnifying lens
  • Canned air

Instructions

Check some features that may seem like a no-brainer. Have you ever called out a repair tech only to learn that your monitor was turned off or your dryer wasn't plugged in? It happens all the time. Try a brand new set of batteries fresh from the package in the toy and the controller and make sure they are both turned on.

Double-check the frequency settings. Most RC toys and their transmitters have modifiable settings, in case of interference. Look carefully to make sure both parts are set to the same frequency. If so, try switching to a different frequency, just in case.

Take the toy casing apart, if possible. Check for foreign objects, water, dirt or mud. If there are interior parts that look dusty, use the canned air to carefully blow it away. Wipe off any dirt or water using the microfiber cloth. If there seems to be a lot of water, set the toy in the sun or near a heater, or dry it with a hair dryer. Drying the toy may solve the problem.

Find a similar toy at a yard sale, thrift store or in your child's toy box. If you have two, similar, non-working RC toys, you may be able to salvage parts from one. This is especially helpful if the broken part is external or cosmetic.

Contact the toymaker. The manufacturer may be able to provide tips specific to that toy, which can help you repair it. The company might also be able to send you replacement parts, if it calls for that. At times, there are toy recalls due to a common malfunction. If that is the case, the manufacturer will fix it for you or send you a replacement.

Look carefully for loose wiring, cracks or broken gears. You may need to use the magnifier. If you see loose wires, carefully repair them with electrical tape. Cracked or broken parts might be fixable with a little glue.
