How to Assemble a Ship Kite

Ship kites are designed to resemble flying ships. The kites most commonly look like clipper ships or pirate ships, and assembling them takes some ingenuity. Some ship kites look like famous sailing shops or Spanish galleons and assembling these types of clipper ships offers the kite enthusiast a chance for a history lesson as well.

  Assemble the ship guide. The guide is part of the control mechanism for the ship kite. The guide can be used as a foundation for assembling the other elements of the ship kite.

  Put together the base part of the ship. This is the overall shape of the ship, whether it is a pirate ship or a flying model of the Mayflower.

  Lock on the sails or the uppermost part of the ship kite's design. The sails are designed to flap in the wind, so make certain they are anchored to the ship kite properly.

  Add the long streamer tails. These can be as long as you like. When the ship kite is soaring through the sky, the streaming tails resemble a trail through the waves, adding an additional touch of magic to the ship kite.

  Secure the heavy string and adjust the tension on the keel of the kite to keep the ship kite flying straight and true through the sky. The ship kite is designed to fly as if it were cutting across the sky at an angle, almost as if it were riding a huge wave.
