Buy a helicopter with a training base. The base teaches you how to control, take off and land the helicopter. This will help you from getting frustrated outside when it won't take off or when it keeps going left and not where you want it to go. Helicopters are three-dimensional and most people are not used to this, so train first before taking the helicopter outdoors.
Find the latest technology. Buy a helicopter that can stay in the air longer than it takes to charge the battery. Many helicopters fly for less than 10 minutes. Find a helicopter that can fly as long as you want to be outside. This adds to the cost of the helicopter, but will be worth it in the long run.
Buy a remote-controlled helicopter with a rechargeable battery or built-in battery. Buy a kit that comes with its own recharging system. This will save "fun" time because you won't have to take apart the plane, find the battery, charge the battery, and then replace the battery.
Decide where you want to fly the helicopter. The two-channel Air Hog is a good indoor option that allows you to fly the helicopter with left, right, forward and reverse controls. It is compact and easily maneuverable in confined spaces. More experienced and daring pilots should buy an outdoors 6-7 channel helicopter like the Predator 400 3D Aerobatic Ready-to-Fly Helicopter.
Choose a helicopter that won't easily break when it crashes. Choose a helicopter made from polypropylene foam or other similar material that won't be destroyed on impact. Or choose a helicopter that has replacement parts available.
