How to Make a Plush Owl

Fashion a plush owl out of a few pieces of felt and printed fabric to create an inexpensive stuffed animal. Place the owl in the center of the pillows on your couch or bed for an added touch to your decor, or sew together an owl as a gift to a child or owl-lover in your life. You can shrink the design and create a dozen of these woodland pals to hang from your Christmas tree. Change the color and print for a more realistic owl, such as a solid white bird that resembles a snowy owl.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 1 yard of gray felt into two 6-by-12-inch oval pieces; the two shapes should resemble pills. Place the two cut-out pieces of felt together so the ends are flush. Pin the two pieces of felt together with a row of straight pins inserted at a 1-inch seam.

    • 2

Sew the two pieces of felt together at a 1/2-inch seam with a running stitch, using white embroidery floss. Leave a 6-inch section unsewn. Remove the pins.

    • 3

Flip the felt pieces right-side out. Stuff the felt with polyfil until you have the desired fullness for your owl. Sew the remaining 6-inch section of the felt, using a whipstitch.

    • 4

Position the stuffed owl shape lengthwise on a flat surface so you are looking at the front side. Cut two 3-inch circles from an 8-by-4-inch piece of white felt. Place the circles on the top end of the owl's face. Sew the circles on for the owl's eyes, using a whipstitch. Sew a 2-inch-wide button in the center of each of the circles.

    • 5

Place a 3-inch triangle of black felt 2 inches below the two circles in the center of the owl's face. Turn the triangle so that one of the points is facing down. Attach the triangle to make the owl's beak, using a whipstitch.

    • 6

Cut two 3-by-6-inch ovals from 1 yard of floral fabric. Turn the owl so that you are looking at the left side. Position one of the floral ovals lengthwise so that it covers half of the front and half of the back panels of the owl. Use a whipstitch to sew on the panel for the left wing. Attach the other oval in the same manner on the right side of the owl.

    • 7

Cut two 2-inch triangles from the floral fabric. Sew the triangles to the top of the owl's head, one on each corner, so that one of the corners is facing up for the owl's ears.
