How to Make Animal Toys

Stuffed animal toys are classics. Kids love to play with them, collectors love to preserve them, and even pets to chew or cuddle them. Instead of spending money on a premade stuffed animal toy, you can make your own with inexpensive felt and basic sewing skills. Feel free to get creative by making any type of animal toy you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the animal shape you would like to create. You can choose to make a rabbit, a dog, a fish, an octopus---anything you'd like. Simply draw out the shape to size on a sheet of heavy paper like card stock. This way you can reuse the pattern you've just created as often as you'd like.

    • 2

Cut out the shape and lay it on top of two pieces of felt that have been pinned together in the center with a straight pin. Using a permanent marker, trace around the edge of your shape directly onto the felt.

    • 3

Sew along the lines of your traced shape. Move slowly and steadily so your lines are even. Leave an opening about 3-inches long somewhere around the edge of your toy. This is the hole you will use to stuff your toy.

    • 4

Trim the excess material around your lines. Turn your felt animal inside out, using a chopstick or pencil to push out the thinner corners and crevices.

    • 5

Stuff your doll full of a polyfiber fill as tightly and evenly as possible. You will want your toy to be full and soft, so don't worry about overstuffing. Once you are done stuffing your toy, simply sew the hole shut by hand.

Add details like buttons or embroider a face to give your animal the personality you want.
