How do I Build a Water Chair?

Sure, you could just go out and buy a flotation chair, but what fun would that be? You can throw together a floating chair from standard PVC pipe and a couple of pieces cut from a pool noodle and have something truly unique. Not only can you pick your own colors for the floats and the chair webbing, but you can also adjust the back and seat dimensions for a custom fit. With some pre-cut PVC pipes and a few joints, you'll be lounging on the water in no time.

Things You'll Need

  • 7 lengths of 1-inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe, 24 inches long
  • 4 90-degree PVC joints for 1-inch pipe
  • 2 3-way PVC joints for 1-inch pipe
  • PVC pipe cement
  • Foam pool noodle, 4-inch diameter, with center hole
  • 2 pieces waterproof upholstery fabric, 24 inches by 28 inches
  • Waterproof upholstery cement

Instructions

    • 1

Glue a length of PVC pipe into all three openings of a three-way joint.

    • 2

Glue the center hole of another three-way joint onto the pipe sticking from the center hole of the first three-way joint.

    • 3

Glue two lengths of pipe into the remaining holes of the second three-way joint.

    • 4

Cut a 22-inch piece from the pool noodle, and run a length of PVC pipe through it. Glue 90-degree joints to either side of this pipe. Repeat with another 22-inch piece of pool noodle and another length of PVC pipe. These are the two float assemblies.

    • 5

Glue the float assemblies onto the free ends on both side of the chair frame.

    • 6

Place a length of waterproof upholstery fabric across one opening in the frame. Wrap the ends of the fabric around the PVC pipe and glue the seams shut with upholstery cement. Repeat with the other length of fabric on the other opening of the frame. Allow the cement to dry thoroughly.
