How to Make a Tutu Skirt for a Stuffed Animal

Turn your child's stuffed animal into a ballerina with a homemade tutu. Fashion a tutu skirt for a stuffed animal in an afternoon using a technique that does not involve pricking your fingers with needles. Tulle comes in a rainbow of different colors as well as printed versions, including designs featuring shimmery stars or specked with sparkling glitter. Combine more than one color of tulle for a rainbow-colored tutu skirt. Or, embellish the tulle tutu with gems or rhinestones for a bit of bling.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure a 1/2-inch-wide strip of elastic so that it fits snuggly around the waist of the stuffed animal with 1 inch overlapping.

    • 2

Cut a 1-inch square of Velcro. Place it in between the overlapping ends of the elastic. Stick the ends together so you have a complete loop of the elastic.

    • 3

Fold 2 yards of tulle in half and cut the tulle down the fold. Turn a section of the tulle so the length of the tulle is horizontal to you. Cut the tulle in strips spaced every 3 inches that start on the side of the tulle closest to you and go across to the other side; do not cut down the length of the tulle or the strips will be too long. Repeat this with the other three sections of tulle.

    • 4

Place the elastic band over the back of a chair or stretch it taut between someone else's arms.

    • 5

Take a strip of the tulle and fold it in half. Position the tulle with the folded center over the elastic band. Tie the tulle strip around the elastic in a double knot that is tight against the elastic. Repeat this with the remaining strips of tulle all the way around the elastic band; do not add tulle over the Velcro ends.

    • 6

Trim the tulle around the skirt, if desired, to make the skirt shorter. Undo the elastic band using the Velcro closure and place it around the waist of a stuffed animal.
