Cast on eight stitches and knit 16 rows in garter stitch.
Cut your yarn, leaving about a 1-inch tail. Do not cast off. Cast on eight more stitches. Work 16 rows on your new eight stitches in garter stitch. These will form your bear's legs.
Knit across all 16 stitches to connect what you've done. Then knit eight rows.
Add four stitches to each end of the row. Knit 10 rows.
Cast off four stitches at the start of the next row. Cast off four stitches at the end of the row. Check that you now have 16 stitches on your knitting needles.
Knit 38 rows.
Cast on eight stitches, four at the beginning and four at the end. Then knit 10 rows.
Cast off four stitches at the beginning of the next row and four more stitches at the end. Then knit 8 rows.
Use your first eight stitches to knit 16 rows.
Bind off. You should have eight stitches remaining.
Use your remaining eight stitches to knit 16 rows. Bind off and weave in loose ends if necessary.
Sew a seam around the bear using yarn the same color as you've been using. Allow for a gap between the two legs, where you'll stuff the bear.
Turn the bear right side out.
Felt the bear's body if you want, to make it smoother.
Push stuffing in to the top of the head. Make bear ears by backstitching a diagonal line along the top of its head.
Stuff the rest of the bear and stitch it up so that no stuffing leaks out.
Embroider eyes, a nose, and a mouth on its face.
To make its neck, sew around the neck with yarn, going in every few stitches. Tug on the thread often in order to gather the neck area and tie off.
