How to Remove Smoke From a Stuffed Animal

Stuffed animals are plush toys characterized by being filled with a type of natural or synthetic stuffing. Unfortunately, stuffed animals are particularly prone to smoke damage because of their soft and porous nature, and it can be difficult to fully restore stuffed animals to their original state after they've been exposed to smoke. Some stuffed animals can simply be placed in the washing machine, but for those that cannot, you will need to clean them by hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray laundry stain remover directly onto the smoke stain and allow it to set according to the directions on the package. If your stuffed animal can be safely laundered, place it in the washing machine on a cold, gentle setting.

    • 2

Wash your stuffed animal by hand in a bucket of cold water if it cannot be safely laundered. Place it in a clothes dryer, or set it out to dry in the sun once finished.

    • 3

Rub the stain with a cloth soaked in white vinegar if the smoke persists. Wipe down the entire stuffed animal with white vinegar to remove odors and discoloration. Allow the stuffed animal to air-dry.

    • 4

Sprinkle baking soda over the stuffed animal. Allow the baking soda to sit on the stuffed animal overnight.

    • 5

Brush the baking soda off with your hand in the morning.
