Mini Sock Monkey Instructions

While traditional sock monkeys are made from adult sized socks, a mini sock monkey can be made with a pair of children's socks using the same technique. Mini sock monkeys are the perfect size for young children. Plus, a mini sock monkey requires less quilt batting than a regular-sized sock monkey, so it costs less to make. Sock monkeys are traditionally made using socks with a heel and toe that are a different color than the rest of the sock. This helps define the "monkey's" head and face.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay one of the socks flat on a table with the heel facing up and the toe at the top. Cut the leg part of the sock in half lengthwise, stopping just below the heel.

    • 2

Stuff the sock full of quilt batting and sew it closed underneath the heel and in between the slit leg pieces. The leg pieces will form the legs of the monkey. Stuff the legs with batting and sew them closed at the bottom.

    • 3

Lay the second sock flat on a table, with the heel facing to the side. Cut the leg part of the sock off and sew two seams down the middle of it, 1/2 inch apart. Cut in between these seams to form the arms of the monkey.

    • 4

Sew one arm to each side of the monkey. Stuff the arms full of batting and sew them closed.

    • 5

Cut the heel off of the second sock and sew it to the front of the body of the monkey to form its mouth. Leave the seam open about 3 inches.

    • 6

Using the opening in the seam, stuff the mouth full of quilt batting. Sew the 3-inch opening closed.

    • 7

Cut the remaining part of the second sock in half lengthwise. Sew the longer piece into a tube-like form and stuff it full of quilt batting. This will form the monkey's tail. Sew the tail onto the bottom of the monkey.

    • 8

Cut out two ear-shaped pieces from the remaining material of the second sock. Sew the ears to the top of the monkey's head. Sew two buttons just above the monkey's mouth, spaced about 2 inches apart, to form his eyes.
