How to Get Cigarette Smoke & Stains out of Stuffed Animals

Stuffed animals are both prized as collectible items and cherished as beloved toys. Stains and cigarette smoke odor can sometimes mar the attractiveness of a stuffed toy, and bring down the resale or market value. Stains can be removed using common laundry stain pre-treaters, and cigarette smoke odor can be banished with the simple use of baking soda. Don't let that stuffed animal sit unloved or go unpurchased because of smoke odor. With the use of a home remedy, your stuffed animal will be stain-free and smoke-free in no time.

  • Laundry stain pre-treatment spray such as Spray 'n Wash

Instructions

  1. Stuffed Animal Stain Removal

    • 1

Spray a laundry stain pre-treater onto the stain, and allow the stuffed animal to soak for the manufacturer's recommended amount of time.

    • 2

Wash the stuffed animal in cold water in the wash machine on a gentle cycle or in a bucket by hand, adding the manufacturer's recommended amount of clothes detergent.

    • 3

Dry the stuffed animal in the clothes dryer on a low heat, gentle cycle or allow to drip dry on a clothesline. Air drying runs the risk of the stuffed animal not drying out completely, so ensure that the toy is in a well-ventilated area with a free circulation of air.

Removing Cigarette Smoke Odor from Stuffed Animals

    • 4

Place 1 cup of baking soda into a 1-gallon or larger sized zipper plastic baggy.

    • 5

Put the stuffed animal into the baggy and zip closed. Allow the baggy to sit unopened, for two weeks.

    • 6

Check to see if the odor has dissipated after two weeks. Baking soda neutralizes the odor and absorbs it, leaving the fabric odor-free. Add 1/2-cup of fresh baking soda if the odor continues to linger and reseal the baggy for another week.

    • 7

Brush the baking soda from the stuffed animal with your hand.
