How to Make Clothes for a Sock Monkey

Use your monkey to make a pattern. Most sock monkeys are made out of long tube socks. You do not need a long sock to make a sweater or a pair of pants, but you must measure and mark the socks with chalk in order to create a pattern to follow for your outfit. Lay the monkey on top of the socks. The brown sock will be the pants. Since the top of the sock is the waistline, you will need to mark where you want the ends of the legs based on where the sock monkey's legs end. For the sweater, the waistband of the sweater will be the top of the sock, so the sock will be upside down, with the toe extending up toward the sock monkey's head. Mark the spots where the monkey's arms will come out of the sweater and also draw in the neckline. You can make it a V-neck or a rounded neck.

Cut up the socks according to the lines that you made when you were drawing the patterns. You will need to cut off the toe of the brown sock and up the middle so that the sock monkey's legs will have separate pants legs. You will also cut holes for the sock monkey's arms in the argyle sock, and cut off the toe of the sock based on the neckline that you designed.

Sew the legs of the brown sock pants. Sew up each side of the slit in the middle to create two pants legs. Use tight, small, looping stitches. If you are using a sewing machine, then use a zigzag stitch.

Sew the sweater's neckline. The argyle sock will need the shoulders stitched up so that the sweater will stay on the monkey. Use tight, small, looping stitches to sew the front and the back of the shoulders together. If you are using a sewing machine, use a zigzag stitch to prevent raveling.

Decorate the front of the sweater with the buttons. Depending on the length of your monkey's sweater, it may need one to three buttons down the front. They can match or not. It is entirely up to you. Once you have finished the buttons, pull your monkey's sweater over his head and his pants up over the legs. He is now one classy sock monkey.
