How to Mount Servos on a Radio Box

Radio boxes are moisture-resistant plastic boxes intended to hold remote-controlled components used within a moisture-rich environment, such as a toy boat. While the boxes aren̵7;t waterproof, using them to protect your remote-controlled servos will help to keep the servos operational by keeping most moisture away from the servo components. Most radio boxes are built without mounting holes for the servos to allow you freedom of servo placement, so mounting the servos on a radio box will require some box modification during the mounting process.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the position for the servo box where the servo arms will have full range of movement within the box, with the rods extending from the servo able to move freely within the box when extended from the box sides towards the remote connections. Mark the box location with a pencil. If there are pre-drilled mounting holes in the box, then mount the holes as well.

    • 2

Mount the radio box in place using a drill with a screw set and screws that are compatible with the mounting surface.

    • 3

Mark the location of the servo mount brackets on the base of the radio box with a pencil. The brackets should be placed so that the servo arms can turn freely when attached to the base of the box, pushing and pulling the rods connected to the servo arms as needed to run the remote attachments. Mount the brackets to the box using screws through the mounting holes and then through the box base into the mounted surface.

    • 4

Place the servos into the brackets with the screw holes in the top of the servo aligned with the mounting holes on the tops of the servo mounts. Test the servo arm movement to make certain that the arms move freely through the needed arc to control the remote attachments that the servo will move using attached rods. Screw the servos to the mounts using the bracket screws to hold the servos in place.
