Things You'll Need
Instructions
Draw a design layout of your race track on the poster board. With a ruler and pencil draw the race track as it will look when completed. Be sure to mark every aspect of your track including all the turns, jumps, and any other feature on the track. Include important distances between aspects of the track so you will know exactly how far each segment should be from each other. The race track plans act as a guide while building your track. Planning everything on the poster board will help you catch problems in your design before you begin building.
Select an area to build your race track. Open land on your property is ideal, but check with local hobby store owners to see if they can help you select an area for your track.
Dig a groove outline that will form the outside of the completed track. Push the shovel into the ground and use your foot to push it further down. Scoop the dirt away and place it inside a wheelbarrow for later use. Remove three to four inches of dirt from the ground to create the groove around the track. Continue removing dirt until you have built a trench outline around the track.
Build the banked edges of your race track using the dirt that you placed in the wheel barrow. Use the shovel to place it in a pile along the side of every turn. Pour water on top of the bank and press it down with the back of the shovel. Banked turns keep the cars from sliding off the track in corners.
Build the jumps and obstacles on your track using the remaining dirt in the wheel barrow. The amount of dirt used for each depends on the type of obstacle you are making. Shape the dirt with your hands to form the jump or bump. Pour water on top of the dirt and use the back of the shovel to pack everything down and help it stick together.
Rake the track with a standard garden rake to smooth out the dirt along the raceway. Continue to pour water on the track as you rake so the dirt soaks up the water. Water will make the dirt softer, which gives the trucks better traction as they race.
Spray the white paint along the outline of the track to create a visual barrier along the raceway. The white lines will show drivers the limits of the course and help them keep their trucks on the track. Also use the paint to create the start and finish lines on the track.
Drive your RC truck through the course to test out the track before having a race. Test the turns, jumps and any other obstacles on the track to make sure they work and that your truck can get through each of them without taking any damage.
