How to Hook up a Servo Linkage for an RC Airplane

Setting up servo linkage to a radio-controlled aircraft means setting up the radio transmitter and receiver to allow the remote control of the airplane. A servo is connected in either a 4-, 5- or 6-channel receiver pattern; your aircraft's servo connection is dictated by which receiver transmission the RC box and servos require.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 servos
  • 4-, 5- or 6-channel RC receiver/transmitter
  • Y cable

Instructions

  1. 4-Channel

    • 1

Insert a "Y" adapter cable to the set of servos on the mid-center of the aricraft's ailerons. Plug the single end of the "Y" into the receiver box "Channel 1" plug. Ailreons are the panels on the back of the wings that move up and down, affecting the pitch of the plane. Servos have a small electric plug where the split on the Y cable is inserted.

    • 2

Turn on the RC transmitter box and the servo's receivers. Flatten the ailerons so they are parallel to the wings.

    • 3

Adjust the transmitter controls so they meet the neutral position the ailerons are in, ensuring the servos are calibrated and ready for use.

    • 4

Move the RC transmitter control stick to make the ailerons go up and down. Check them as you move the controls to ensure they are connected and working.

    5-Channel

    • 5

Insert the right-wing servo cable into the "Channel 1" plug on the receiver box. Plug the left-wing servo cable into the "Channel 5" plug on the servo receiver box.

    • 6

Turn on the transmitter and receivers.

    • 7

Use the transmitter control stick to move the ailerons up and down, ensuring the RC connection is made.

    6-Channel

    • 8

Insert the right-wing servo cable into the "Channel 1" plug on the receiver. Insert the left-wing servo cable into the "Channel 6" plug.

    • 9

Turn on the transmitter and receiver.

    • 10

Push the transmitter box up and down to make the ailerons move, making sure the RC connection is working.
