DIY Go Kart Plans

Go-karts are on the list of basic childhood fun toys, along with bicycles and skateboards. While some go-karts are as sophisticated as automobiles, complete with motors and brakes, others are as basic as bicycles. Many go-karts are planned with the basic wheels and a board and can be built at home with the proper materials, the proper tools, some patience and a do-it-yourself approach.

Instructions

  1. Foundation

    • 1

Select a foundation for the go-kart, which will hold the seat and have the frame attached to it. The foundation material can be metal, wood or even PVC. The target size of the foundation material is between four and six feet long, according to the height of the driver. A sheet of wood, metal or PVC may be longer than you need, but when purchased at a home improvement store, the foundation may be trimmed to size. The foundation material may be trimmed by a home improvement professional, or at home. Metal and PVC will need to be cut with a hacksaw, while wood will need to be cut with a handsaw. Trim two triangle shapes off of either side of one end of the foundation.

    • 2

Lay the foundation on the floor and measure the 2-by-4 piece of wood, making a mark for trimming based on the size of the foundation. The 2-by-4 will need to be trimmed to form a rectangle shape with a triangle shape on top of it. Attach the each 2-by-4 to the foundation with nails for wood and PVC and screws for metal matching the triangle shape of the frame to the end of the foundation with the trimmed triangles on either side. Attach a 2-by-4 to the end of the frame with the triangle in preparation for the attachment of the steering column. Smooth out the ends and edges of the frame with sandpaper.

    • 3

Attach the wheels to the frame with nails or use bolts and brackets to attach the metal axles to the frame. Attach wheels to either end of the axles.

    • 4

Weld the steering blocks to the frame and attach the steering post to the end of the frame with the triangle trims.

    • 5

Drill a hole in the frame to allow the seat to be bolted to the frame. Use the top of an old office chair with a single post, or a seat from a hobby shop that has its own bolts and nuts.
