How to Fix a Big Sound Mach 5 Speed Racer

The Hot Wheels Speed Racer Big Sounds Mach 5 radio-controlled car lets children age 3 and older drive and race their own toy vehicle. You might need to fix the Mach 5 if it stops working or begins to malfunction; common problems include lack of power, poor radio reception or slow driving speeds. In many cases, the problem has a simple solution that does not require a great deal of time to repair.

Turn the car over and remove the screw from the battery cover using a Phillips screwdriver. Pry out the batteries and install two fresh AA replacements, making sure the positive and negative polarities match the markings on the base of the battery compartment. Dead or dying batteries reduce the range of the car, slow the motor and eventually cause the Mach 5 to stop.

    • 2

Make sure the power switch, located above the battery compartment on the underside of the car, is in the position marked "I." Due to its location, the power switch is susceptible to knocks from objects passing underneath the Mach 5. The car stops suddenly if the power switch is accidentally jogged into the "O" position.

Try using the Mach 5 away from the TV, radio or cordless phone if you find the vehicle fails to respond to controller input or moves based on phantom input. Interference from wireless electronics may effect the Mach 5's performance and handling.
