How to Convert LEGO 9-Volt Trains to Radio Control

Traditionally, scale model train sets required the engineer to drive the vehicle from a control board connected to the track. The LEGO 9-volt train set follows in the same footsteps as other hobby train sets; however, a recent advancement in radio control systems has allowed trains to be converted into radio-controlled (RC) vehicles. Learn how to convert your LEGO 9-volt train into an RC vehicle using a radio control system (RCS).

Things You'll Need

  • RCS
  • U-bik Kit
  • 9-volt battery
  • 9-volt battery connector
  • ECL-DEC

Instructions

    • 1

Pull off the top portion of the locomotive to gain access to the inner electronics of the train.

    • 2

Disconnect the motor wires (orange and gray) from the stock electronics, then connect them into the motor inputs (labeled 'M') on the RCS board. Insert the orange connector into the plug closest to the edge of the RCS. Insert the quadra-pronged input of the RCS into the matching connector of the ECL-DEC. Connect the red (positive) and black (negative) 9-volt battery connectors into the matching connectors on the RCS.

    • 3

Choose one of the six Plug RX connectors, then install a frequency crystal into the ECL-DEC. Orient the entire RCS system (ECL-DEC, RCS and battery) into the train's locomotive.

    • 4

Secure the locomotive's top portion by pressing it down onto the bottom half of the train.

    • 5

Place the locomotive and the rest of the train onto the track, then turn on the locomotive and the hand-held transmitter. Use the left joystick on the transmitter to move the train.
