How to Build an X-Wing Fighter

An iconic vessel of the Star Wars universe, the X-Wing is a towering symbol of the Rebel Alliance's fortitude against the Galactic Empire, and the toy version of the X-Wing has become a popular collectors item. Though an officially licensed version of the X-Wing is ideal for some, many do-it-yourself folks should be pleased to learn that you can make one with just a few, simple and cheap office supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 chisel sharpie
  • 4 pen lids
  • 1 small pencil sharpener
  • 4 2-inch brass fasteners
  • 2 medium binder clips
  • 2 large binder clips
  • 1 defunct memory chip or similar
  • 1 strip of staple
  • hot glue
  • poster putty
  • silver spray paint

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the memory chip under the Sharpie's clip. For a more secure placement, you could use glue, but the clip itself should work fine.

    • 2

Take the legs off the binder clips. Take the legs of the medium clips and attach them to the large ones. Make sure you don't bend or deform the clip legs when doing this. It takes a little strength, but as long as you're firm and careful it should be simple enough.

    • 3

Fasten the medium binder clips on the memory card clipped to the Sharpie. It's very important at this point that these parts are made secure in a durable, long-lasting way, so you should probably use glue. The pencil sharpener should be glued on to the body of the Sharpie, along the label, too, to act as the cockpit.

    • 4

Glue the pen lids in place, starting with the underside, to act as the X-Wing's thrusters. For cannons, attach, with glue, two of the fasteners to the bottom wings.

    • 5

Attach the two top thrusters with glue. Use a bit of poster putty here. This will make them more secure, because they don't have anything to support or lean against. Behind the cockpit, glue a staple strip. On either side of it, glue two top pen lids for cannons. Coat the finished product with a layer of silver spray paint to achieve a mechanical gloss. Now you're ready to defend the galaxy!
