How to Make a Toy Rocket Ship

Rockets have captured the imagination of children and adults since they were first invented in 13th century China. These first rockets used solid fuel in the form of fireworks. The difference between a jet engine in an airplane and a rocket engine is that the rocket engine does not need air to work. Rocket engines have everything they need to propel themselves so that they can work in space, where there is no air. Build your own toy rocket ship, with a few simple household items.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Punch a hole in the bottom of a paper cup near an edge with a pencil or pen point. This cup will become the body of your rocket ship.

    • 2

Cut out a 6-inch by 3-inch rectangle out of your cardboard. This will become the wings of the rocket.

    • 3

Glue the wings to the center of the exterior of the cup so that the wings are evenly spaced on the cup. Allow it to completely dry before the next step of this project.

    • 4

Push the string through the punched-out hole in your cup. The string will allow your rocket to launch.

    • 5

Tie one end of the string to a chair. Tie the other free end of the string to another chair. Your rocket should be on the string already.

    • 6

Pull your toy rocket towards one of the ends of the string tied to the chair. Blow on the cup to launch it.
