How to Make a Kiddie Train Ride

Kids love to ride in things to have fun. Riding in toys that look like cars, motorcycles and even trains help children expand their imagination and express themselves by pretending they are a part of the grown-up world. Playing with these kinds of toys can even help them develop motor skills as well as hand-eye coordination, skills important to kids' overall development and growth. Creating a fun train ride for your kids is easy to do with the use of a little creativity, a wagon and some cardboard. Even if you have limited craft skills you can still achieve a fun kiddie ride for your little ones.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a wagon that has wooden rails around it. Make sure there are at least two tiers of rails on the wagon. Visit your local toy store or the toy section in a one-stop-shop store such as Wal-Mart.

    • 2

Measure the perimeter around the sides and front of the wooden rails, and obtain enough cardboard to cover them. It's OK if the height of the cardboard is slightly higher than the height of the rails.

    • 3

Paint the cardboard to look like a train. Paint a side view of a train on the part of the cardboard that will go on the side rails. Include windows and train wheels at the bottom of the train body. Paint a train engine on the cardboard that will go the the front rail, and paint the back cardboard piece in a solid color using the same color you used for the rest of the train.

    • 4

Attach the cardboard to the outside of the wooden rails with hot glue and a glue gun. Plug your glue gun into an electric outlet, and load the glue gun barrel with a glue stick. Your glue gun is ready to use when it is warm to the touch. Squeeze the trigger of your glue gun to release the glue onto the cardboard. Hot glue cools fast, so apply the glue only to the section of the cardboard that you are working with at the time.
