Unwind the existing wire from around the commutator tabs on your slot car's armature. These tabs are the arms extending outward from one end of the armature. There should be three or five of them evenly spaced. Do it gently so as not to damage any part of the motor. Notice the exact way that the wire has been wound around the armature, as this is what you will eventually replicate. You may need a small knife blade to slice through the wire so it can be removed.
Take the wire you have removed from your slot car to a local hobby store so that you can ensure you are getting the same size for your rewind. The wire comes in various sizes, so make sure that you find the most compatible wire to use.
Cut a new length of wire that is an inch or two longer than the wire you removed. You can always trim it later if it is a little too long.
Place one end of the wire flat against a point halfway between two of the commutator tabs on your armature. Make sure it is placed so that the rest of the wire can be wound around the rest of the armature. Apply a small bit of solder to the end of the wire and, using the soldering iron, heat it to melt the solder and affix the wire's end to the armature.
Wrap the wire carefully around the armature in the same way as the original wire. Solder the wire in place halfway between every commutator tab.
Trim the end of the wire after winding so that the wire lies flat on the armature with both ends touching. Solder the end to the armature to finish your rewinding.
