Models
If you have a dad who loves cars and is also a bit of a model hobbyist, combine his two passions with a model car kit. Many different car model kits are available online, and these can be a great, affordable gift for your dad. For example, the Build Your Own Porsche model kit includes everything you need to make a 1:38 scale model of a Boxster convertible at an inexpensive rate. The kit includes the frame of the car (made of red die-cast metal), pull-back motor, rubber tires, lights, indicators and even a dashboard.
Driving Experience
Driving experiences allow your dad to go out on a real race track and try out a real race car. You can buy specific driving experiences with anything from a Ferrari to a Nascar race car. Nascar racing enthusiasts can attend the Richard Petty Driving Experience, which is held at 20 tracks around the US. Your dad can either drive a Nascar race car himself or sit in the passenger seat while a professional instructor zips around the course. Driving experience costs vary, so do your research before giving him this gift of a lifetime.
RC Cars
Remote control cars are available in various different styles and have some real power. Some nitro (gas powered) RC cars can get up to 60 mph, and are a good gift idea for a dad who likes boys' toys. You can buy remote control cars made to look like a variety of real race cars, such as a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Mitsubishi Lancer. Electric remote control cars are a little cheaper, but cannot achieve speeds comparable to the nitro-powered cars.
Slot Cars
A slot car -- a remote control car that goes around a track with two grooves running down it -- is another great gift idea for Dad. Tracks come in a variety of different designs, and two cars race around the track in competition. If you travel too quickly around a corner, the cars are prone to fly off the track, ruining your chances in the race. Many different slot car tracks are available, including the Scalextric brand, which offers a track creator on its website.
