Motorized Riding Toys for Kids

You can pull out a lot of toys to get your kids outside and playing, such as ride-on toys. Motorized riding toys are ideal for driveways and front yards. A few different types of these toys are available.
  1. Types of Toys

    • There are two main types of motorized ride-on toy, the power scooter and the ride-on car. Scooters are flat boards with two wheels and a handle at about waist height. The motor is on the back, where it pushes the wheel. Ride-on cars are shaped like real cars, and have similar controls to the real thing. However, they are much smaller and made of plastic, and don't go as fast.

    Style of Vehicle

    • Scooters predominantly come in one style, but the size may vary depending on the rider. Of riding cars, like the Power Wheels series, the cars are based on real-life cars. There are vehicles based on the Ford Mustang and Hummer lines of cars, as well as those decorated with characters, like a Jeep decorated with characters from "Dora the Explorer." A few ride-on cars are based on motorcycles and Vespa scooters.

    Power Motor

    • The power of the motor may vary from vehicle to vehicle, and will affect the speed and power of your car. The more powerful the battery and the motor, the faster the car. Vehicles at higher powers are recommended for older children, while less powerful vehicles are ideal for new drivers. If you are considering modifying your ride-on car or scooter, you need to use a motor capable of handling the battery voltage, or you may burn out the motor.

    Safety

    • Any kid riding a motorized toy should wear a helmet. If she crashes a car or scooter, it could cause injury even at low speeds. A helmet can protect her from brain injury during the worst case scenarios. If a child is riding on the driveway, a parent or supervisor should keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't drive into the street, which could be extremely dangerous, even on quiet roads.
