Things You'll Need
Instructions
Disconnect and reconnect the speed controllers, as they may not have a good connection to the track. Do the same for the power cable, ensuring that the electric wall socket is also working properly.
Examine all pieces of the track, checking for breaks or buildup. Clean any residue with either the cotton swab and alcohol, or a small wire brush. If you see breaks in the metal on any track pieces, they will need to be replaced. Also check that all track pieces are securely connected together, as this allows for a completed circuit.
Examine the contact brushes, also known as braids, on the bottom of the slot car. Ensure that they are properly situated and are making contact with the track. If they are not making contact, bend them out slightly to ensure full contact.
Clean the contact brushes on the bottom of the car, again using either a small wire brush or alcohol and a cotton swab. Check that all residue is removed from the contact brushes, as debris and buildup on the brushes will affect the car's operation.
Open the body of the slot car and ensure that all wires are still properly connected. If there are disconnected wires, reconnect them to restore power to the vehicle when it is on the track.
Check that the axle is properly placed inside the car, with the cogs of the gears inside all matching up correctly. If these are not matched up properly, you can experience a slow-driving slot car, or a car that periodically surges forward. Once done, replace the body of the car.
