How to Fine-Tune an Esky Helicopter

Offering the most complex form of aerial maneuverability, radio-controlled (RC) helicopters often are considered to be the most difficult aircraft to fly. To reduce the difficulties faced by RC enthusiasts, Esky designed its helicopters with simplistic systems. Fine-tuning your Esky helicopter ensures that you get the best experience from your RC, while also minimizing any risk of damage.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Adjust Rotor Tracking

    • 1

Turn the helicopter and transmitter on, then apply light throttle while observing the main rotors horizontally. Watch the spinning rotors, and check that they spin in a perfectly horizontal path. Turn off the helicopter before making any adjustments.

    • 2

Unclip the pitch-control link attached to the problem rotor. The control links run vertically from the rotor; they are metal rods with plastic cup-links on either end. Disconnect the plastic cup-links from the round head-bolt by popping the cup-link off with a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 3

Rotate the cup-link counter-clockwise to raise the blade height, or clockwise to lower it. Make minor adjustments to both the top and bottom cup-links to prevent completely detaching the cup-link from the control rod. Align the cup-link with the snap-connector to test that your adjustments are correct.

    • 4

Press the cup-link back onto the metal nub where it connects. Turn the helicopter back on and retest to see if your adjustments are correct. If they are not, turn off the vehicle and make any necessary re-adjustments.

    Gain Trimmer Adjustment

    • 5

Assess your helicopter in mid-flight for stability. Apply enough throttle to get it off the ground, then check to see if the tail wobbles back and forth.

    • 6

Unclip the two body-mounting pins, then remove the body shell to reveal the interior of the helicopter.

    • 7

Locate the gyro on the top of the tail rod, closest to the main rotors. It is a small, cylindrical device labeled with the Esky logo.

    • 8

Find the gain adjuster on the front face of the gyro. Pressing the bottom button will decrease (-) the gain, while the top one will increase (+) it; you can identify them by their respective labels of (-) and (+). Decrease the gyro gain to improve a slight tail wobble; Increase the gyro gain to straighten out significant wobbling. In general, a wobble that covers less than 2 inches of distance is considered a slight imbalance, while anything larger is a significant wobble.
