How Do I Convert the Traxxas TRX 2.5 to a Pull Start?

When first starting off, the EZ-Start system is one of the ultimate conveniences offered by Traxxas. However, after a few journeys to the track with the cumbersome starter box, experienced drivers soon find themselves longing for a more practical method of starting their cars. The TRX 2.5 is a standard engine offered by Traxxas, which comes stock with most of their pre-assembled vehicles. By learning how to replace your EZ-Start with a pull-start mechanism, you'll be able to shave off some extra weight from your car's chassis, and reduce the tools you need to bring to the track.

Remove the two screws securing the exhaust pipe and header. The header is the blue metal block located on top of the engine, its primary purpose is to absorb the heat generated by the engine. The exhaust expels the waste produced by the engine, which is predominantly smoke. Disconnect the exhaust pipe and header from the engine, once the screws are completely removed.

Remove the three screws holding the EZ-Start assembly to the engine. The EZ Start mechanism is a series of four gears connected to an electric motor. When the EZ-Start is engaged, the electric motor turns the engine piston while a battery inside the EZ-start sparks the nitro inside the engine's combustion chamber. The EZ-Start is one of the most convenient ways to start a nitro RC engine. Disconnect the EZ-Start and set it aside --- the entire unit is enclosed in a metal housing.

Slip the pull-start mechanism over the crankshaft head. The spool within the pull-start should face the engine block. Orient the pull-string so that it pulls up, this will make it easy to access when the vehicle is on the ground. Screw on the three screws. Use a glow-plug ignitor the next time you start up your car, since it will require it to turn on the engine. The glow plug is a heating element located within the combustion chamber of the engine. When the engine chamber fills with nitro, the glow plug ignites causing an explosion that generates the energy used for driving the vehicle.

Test the functionality of the pull-start by pulling the start mechanism with swift force. Hold the vehicle down with one hand, then grip the plastic mechanism on the end of the pull string. Make one quick motion to pull the string out about six-inches from the engine. Listen for the puttering sound of the piston as you pull the string. This sound indicates that the pull-start was properly installed.
