RC Nitro Cylinder Removal

The nitro engine of your radio-controlled (RC) vehicle is like a miniature version of the combustion engine that powers your real car. One of the great things about hobby-grade RC is the ability to disassemble every moving part in the vehicle. Learning how to access the interior parts of your car's nitro engine will not only help you become familiar with how it functions, but it could help you diagnose any problems you may face with it in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble the exhaust pipe and header from the engine by loosening the two mounting screws. Remove the starter mechanism from the engine encasement by unscrewing the three mounting screws.

    • 2

Unsnap the E-clip from the crankshaft, then slip the clutch bell off the crankshaft. Remove the clutch shoes from the flywheel pins. Disassemble the flywheel by loosening the nut with an 8mm socket, then disconnect the flywheel by prying it off with a flathead screwdriver.

    • 3

Unscrew the glow plug from within the cooling head, then loosen the four mounting screws in the back-plate to remove it from the crankcase. Loosen the five head bolts from the cooling head to disconnect it from the engine encasement.

    • 4

Wedge a wooden utensil beneath the bottom of the cylinder by accessing it through the rear opening of the crank encasement. If it's difficult to remove the cylinder, use a blow dryer to heat the engine slightly; this should make the extraction significantly easier.
