How to Install a DCC Decoder

A DCC decoder, also known as a digital command controller, allows you to control your train set remotely. These sets are easy to install in most modern trains. As long as you select the appropriate decoder, installation is simple. For advice on choosing the appropriate decoder, consult the manual of your train set or ask the employee at your favorite model train store. DCC decoders vary slightly in features and some offer light or sound options.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the train set from its power source by removing the power adapter from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Lift the motor cover of the track pickup. Detach the wire that connects the motor to the track. Pull the wire from the motor gently. Remove the motor and set it aside.

    • 3

Remove the factory installed plug from the model train's tender.

    • 4

Remove the shell of the tender. Locate the two brass tacks that face upwards. Cut a small length of wire using a wire cutter. Solder this wire to the brass tacks, to connect the two tacks. Solder the wires using a soldering gun.

    • 5

Place the DCC decoder over the hole left by removing the factory installed plug. Solder the motor wires of the tender to the motor wires of the decoder.

    • 6

Pull electrical tape over the soldered wires to insulate them. Place several strips of tape over the surface of the wires.

    • 7

      Reassemble the train's tender.
