How to Make RC Planes at Home

Building an RC plane can be a fun activity for the entire family. Even if you've never built a remote controlled device before, you can do it using an at-home kit. These kits come with detailed instructions, which you should read to get a sense of your particular model's specifications. However, most RC planes follow a similar build pattern.

Things You'll Need

  • RC plane kit
  • Model glue
  • Finishing products
  • Paint
  • Resealable plastic bags
  • RC heat iron
  • RC heat gun

Instructions

    • 1

Unpack the RC kit and lay out all the parts on to your workspace in your home. Open windows for ventilation, as the glue being used can be hazardous. Place small screws and parts into bowls to help keep track of them.

    • 2

Sand all plastic and metal parts to remove rough edges and uneven surfaces. Remove flashing along the edges of plastic parts with a sharp craft knife. Sand smooth to ensure the parts will fit together. Lay the body of the RC plane open on your work area.

    • 3

Assemble the chassis of the plane as guided in the instructions. Screw all parts together tightly but don't over-tighten to avoid stripping screws. When screwing plastic together, use a screw locking liquid to help keep screws tight when the plane is operating.

    • 4

Mount the engine onto the plane chassis, screwing it in place tightly. Apply a small amount of soap to the screw when tightening to help with sticking. Apply a small amount of grease or oil-based lubricant to the gears and moving parts of the engine.

    • 5

Attach the chassis and engine to one side of the plane body. Attach the push rods to the chassis and plane body. Mount your servos and receiver to the push rods and chassis. Attach the second half of the body and glue together.

    • 6

Install the RC batteries included with the plane kit, normally in the compartment under the plane's body. Attach the wings, screwing them in place. Apply a small amount of grease along the joining edges to help with vibration. Turn on the power to your plane. Test the plane to make sure it's receiving all transmissions from the remote.
