How to Connect an RC Cooling Fan to a Main Battery

While high-speed RC runs are achieved with high-energy components, excessive speed can often be curtailed by overheating electronics. Heat sinks that draw excess heat away from key components are available; however, they tend to be expensive and are generally designed for specific tasks. Cooling fans are highly effective alternatives to costly purpose-built heat sinks.

Things You'll Need

  • Hobby knife
  • Cooling fan
  • Barrel connectors (red and black)
  • Double-sided tape
  • Needle-nose pliers

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the red and black wires leading out from the battery compartment in the chassis. Cut a quarter-inch section of the insulation and then peel it away to expose the wire inside. Repeat this process for both wires.

    • 2

Slide a red barrel connector onto the positive wire leading from the battery compartment. Squeeze the connector leads using the needle-nose pliers. Install a black barrel connector on the black wire leading from the battery compartment by repeating this process.

    • 3

Remove a quarter-inch of the insulation on the two wires leading out of the cooling fan. Insert the red wire into the matching barrel connector and then crimp it using the pliers. Repeat this process with the black wire.

    • 4

Install the battery and then turn on the power to test that the cooling fan is functional. Select a position in the vehicle where you would like to mount the cooling fan. Cut an inch-long section of double-sided tape and then press it between the base of the cooling fan and the chassis.
