Homemade RC Car Degreaser

It is important to clean your remote control (RC) car after a long day of play to keep it in tip-top operating condition. Commercially prepared cans of RC car degreaser can cost as much as $20, but there is an effective homemade formula that performs just as well for a fraction of the cost. Using this formula, it is possible to make up to five bottles of homemade cleaner for the price of one commercial can.

Things You'll Need

  • Denatured alcohol
  • WD-40
  • All-purpose household cleaner such as Simple Green or 409
  • Empty bottle with sprayer
  • Small (4 oz) paper cup
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Cotton swabs
  • Lint-free cloths

Instructions

    • 1

Remove sprayer top from empty bottle. Using the 4 oz cup as a standard, measure out one part of household cleaner and two parts of denatured alcohol. Pour into the empty bottle with a funnel. Also add a capful of WD-40, measured using the cap that comes on the WD-40 can.

    • 2

Replace the sprayer top to seal the bottle and shake the mixture well for two to three minutes. It may look like the mixture is combined before this point, but continue to shake to allow the mixture to come together completely.

    • 3

Spray your dirty RC car thoroughly with your homemade degreaser and allow it to sit for one to two minutes. Clean around small parts with cotton swabs and use a lint-free cloth for the body. There is no need to rinse the car with water after cleaning--just use a second lint-free cloth to remove all moisture. This is crucial to prevent rust on any exposed metal parts.

    • 4

Repeat the cleaning process as necessary, being sure to shake the homemade degreaser well before each use.
