How to Make a Toy Train

Toy trains provide hours of entertainment for children. If you are handy, you can make a toy train out of wooden blocks. An even simpler method is to construct an engine and subsequent cars out of cardboard using different-sized shoe boxes. You can paint the shoe boxes any color and decorate them to resemble the engine, passenger cars and freight cars on a train. You can also use a simple piece of string to connect the engine and all the cars.

Things You'll Need

  • Large shoe boxes
  • Toddler shoe boxes
  • Other boxes in various sizes (optional)
  • Craft paint
  • Glue
  • Toilet paper roll
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Nine or more 3/16-inch wooden dowels (optional)
  • Twelve or more circles of polystyrene (optional)

Instructions

  1. Paint the Shoeboxes

      Paint the large and the small shoe boxes the color you want for your train engine. Glue the lid of the large shoebox to its bottom piece. Place glue on the inside of the lid flaps or put glue all the way around the top of the bottom piece. Glue the lid of the smaller box to its bottom piece in the same manner.

      Glue the toddler shoe box to the top of the bigger box, toward the back of the larger box so it resembles a train engine with the driver compartment at the back. Paint the toilet paper roll black.

      Cut four small slits all around the bottom end of the toilet paper roll to make flaps that fold out. Put glue on the flaps and adhere the bottom of the toilet paper roll to the front end of the bigger shoebox to make the train's smokestack.

      Paint windows and wheels on your engine. Add a train engineer if you wish. Paint shoe boxes or other types of small boxes of various sizes to make passenger cars or freight cars. Glue a piece of string between the engine and the first car.

      Glue a piece of string between the passenger and freight cars. so the engine and Connect all the cars in this manner. Glue a piece of string to the front of the shoe box engine if you want to be able to pull the train around.
