How to Build a Very Small Homemade RC Robot

Building an RC, or remote control, robot can be a great project for you, your family or friends to participate in together. You can use an old remote control car or you can assemble your own robot with parts rummaged from other toys. You are only limited by your imagination.

Things You'll Need

  • Servo motors
  • 4.8V or 6V DC battery
  • Remote control car
  • Radio transmitter and receiver
  • Soldering iron and solder
  • Extra toys and metal scraps

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the body from an old toy car, leaving only the undercarriage and wheels. You can use a remote control car if you would like the robot to be mobile.

    • 2

Mount the servo motors to the front part of the car. The shaft of the servo motors should face sideways. Do not mount them too closely to one another. About 1 to 2 inches apart is sufficient. You can lock them in place using mounting brackets or duct tape.

    • 3

Mount the receiver to the rear of the car. Make sure it will not interfere with the movement of the motor. Secure it in place using a mounting bracket and screws.

    • 4

Attach the battery pack on top of the car. You can secure this by wrapping duct tape around it.

    • 5

Attach the wires from the servo motors to the remote control receiver and to the battery. A wire from each of the servo motors will be labeled "Battery"; connect them by twisting the wires together to connect to the battery. Solder the wires coming from the servomotors to the remote control receiver. Wait for them to cool down.

    • 6

Turn on the remote control unit for the servo motors and make them move. You should be able to make your robot spin around. If you used a remote control car as your base, you will also be able to make it move forward and backwards with the car's original remote.

Decorate your robot using bits of scrap metal and other old plastic toys that you think are appealing.
