How to Upgrade Your Electric R/C Car

Electric R/C cars are just like automobiles in that they can be upgraded to improve performance, namely acceleration and handling. Many of the factors that limit your R/C car´s performance are attributed to factory components that are installed to perform reasonably well in all conditions. Fortunately, these parts can be easily upgraded and customized to the specific conditions of the terrain that you race on. You can purchase these upgrade parts at a local hobby store or order them online.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace your R/C car´s battery pack. Most R/C cars originally come installed with a NiCad battery, which provides a low amount of power to your R/C car. This battery limits acceleration and can even cause you to lose power during a race. LiPo batteries provide the highest amount of power and will vastly improve your R/C car´s acceleration, in addition to allowing you to charge and use the battery various times per day.

    • 2

Change the R/C car´s tires according to the terrain that you will be racing on. The terrain can greatly affect you R/C car´s performance and failure to properly adjust can make the difference between winning and losing a race. R/C cars are factory-installed with ready-to-run tires, which perform reasonably well on all terrains. Specialized tires, however, can be obtained for tracks as well as off-road situations.

    • 3

Locate your R/C car´s governor. The governor is a device that caps the top speed that your R/C car can get to. The governor is always located near the R/C car´s motor (refer to your owner´s manual for the exact location) and can be removed with a screwdriver. Unscrew the governor from the frame of the R/C car when it is not running. Your car will no longer have any speed limitations, giving you a significant edge in races.
