How to Switch Gears on a Pocket Bike

A pocket bike is a miniature motorcycle designed for recreational purposes. Pocket bikes are able to travel at speeds in excess of 50 mph and, much like full-sized motorcycles, have a multiple-gear manual transmission. Learning to switch gears on your pocket bike is an important part of riding and is necessary for proper operation. Shifting gears is relatively simple process and you can master it within a few tries.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit down on the pocket bike and place the key in the ignition. Turn it to the "On" position.

    • 2

Depress the clutch on the left handlebar and press the electric start button. Continue holding the clutch.

    • 3

Press down on the shifter lever with your left foot multiple times until the bike is in first gear. Note that some pocket bikes have a digital gauge that shows which gear your pocket bike is in. If your bike does not have a digital gauge, then simply press the gear shifter down until it no longer downshifts.

    • 4

Pull up on the shift lever with your left foot slightly. This places the gear into "Neutral" position, which is between first and second gear. Release the clutch.

    • 5

Start moving by depressing the clutch and pressing down on the shift lever to place the bike in first gear. Slowly release the clutch while simultaneously pulling the throttle on the right handlebar. The bike will begin moving. Continue releasing the clutch and increasing the throttle until you can let go of the clutch completely.

    • 6

Shift into second gear by depressing the clutch, releasing the throttle and pulling up on the shift lever with your left foot. Again, slowly release the clutch while simultaneously applying the throttle.

    • 7

Repeat Step 6 to shift into subsequent gears until you shift into the pocket bike's maximum gear.

    • 8

Downshift by releasing the throttle, depressing the clutch and pressing down on the shift lever with your left foot. Slowly release the clutch. Note that when downshifting there is no need to apply the throttle.
