Homemade Rock Crawler

Many radio controlled (RC) truck enthusiasts enjoy rock-crawler trucks. However, these types of trucks can be more costly than regular radio-controlled vehicles. The alternative to purchasing a radio-controlled rock crawler is turning a regular radio-controlled truck into a rock crawler by adjusting some of its components. This allows the user to customize the truck as well and remove unnecessary components that will reduce the weight of the rock crawler.

Things You'll Need

  • Dremel
  • Small piece of flexible aluminum

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the axles on the radio controlled truck and remove the differential carrier to lock up the differentials.

    • 2

Glue the spider gears together using the JB Weld.

    • 3

Trim the width of the tires slightly to make them narrower with the X-ACTO knife.

    • 4

Make a new tread pattern in the truck's tire. Cut the tires so the lugs are made narrower. Use the Dremel to smooth out the cuts.

    • 5

Replace the servo skid plates by removing them and replacing them with a piece of aluminum. You can fit the aluminum in the same holes made by the skid plates. This is to create a more conventional steering link.

    • 6

Use the Dremel tool's sanding drum to shave the axle bottoms so there is no excess material.

    • 7

Dismount the suspension links with the screwdrivers from the top of the axles. Mount the links to one pivot point.

    • 8

Cut a piece of aluminum rod that will be big enough to make the wheelbase a 1/2 inch longer than it already is. Drill through each end of the rod in order to slide it through the threaded rod and screws on the ends of the rods.

    • 9

Remove any piece of aluminum that is not needed with the Dremel tool. Use the tool to shave off the lower mounting plastic.

    • 10

Dismount the battery tray from the back of the truck with the screw drivers and re-attach it with the same screws to the front of the truck.

    • 11

Open up the truck's motor and remove the gear. Replace this gear with the new 9-tooth gear.

    • 12

Reassemble any remaining truck pieces. The pieces should fit back into their places.
