How to Fly an Electric RC Helicopter

Helicopters can hover in place above the ground, which makes them ideal for monitoring situations such as traffic or wildfires for a TV news broadcast, or helping police officers coordinate the hunt for fleeing suspects. Busy executives employ helicopters to quickly and conveniently travel from one skyscraper roof to another. The allure of helicopter flight leads many people to enjoy the hobby of flying small, electric radio-controlled (RC) helicopters, taking them to places like a park or an empty parking lot. You can join in on the fun by learning how to use the hand-held controls and practicing flying.

  Know the principles of safe RC helicopter flying. Tell nearby people that you are flying a radio-controlled helicopter, and ask them to keep an eye out for it.

  Spin and tilt the rotors in a pre-flight inspection, making sure they can move freely.

  Install fresh batteries in the radio controller and the helicopter. Extend the antenna on the radio controller if it can be extended. Turn on the power for the helicopter and the controller.

  Remain within the maximum transmitting distance between the helicopter and the controller in your hands, making sure that you maintain control over it for steering and landing.

  Push the throttle control up smoothly to make the helicopter take off.

  Push the control stick forward or backward to make the helicopter move forward.

  Push the throttle control farther up to have the helicopter climb higher.

  Pull the throttle back to make the helicopter descend, and look for a safe place to land, avoiding people and bodies of water.
