How to Add Weight to My RC Truck Tires

Weighing down the tires of your RC truck is an important modification if you want it crawling over rocks. Weighing down the wheels will help the truck grip rocks and other terrain without unbalancing the chassis or affecting handling. A few ounces of added weight goes a long way, but as every truck and driver are different, there's no exact right amount of weight to add. Experiment with different weight levels until you find a configuration that works best for you.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wheel and tire assembly from your RC truck.

    • 2

Remove one side of the wheel from the rim and wedge a small funnel between the tire and the rim.

    • 3

Pour about three to seven ounces of small-gauge metal BBs or plastic airsoft pellets into the tire. BBs and pellets are perfect for weighing down your tires because it's easy to control the amount of added weight and they stay at the bottom of the tire, keeping your truck's center of gravity low. When you're done, close the tire and weigh the tire and wheel on a small digital scale.

Alternatively, get stick-on lead weights at your local hobby shop. Remove the tire from the wheel and stick three to seven ounces of weight onto the rim.

    • 5

Add the same amount of weight to both the front left and front right tires. The rear tires should weigh the same as each other as well. You can either make all the wheels the same weight or make the front of the truck heavier. A three to two ratio is common, where you put 60 percent of the added weight in the front tires and 40 percent in the rear.
