How to Make a Cheap Model Airplane

Building a model airplane can be enjoyable, though it can also be an expensive process. To reduce cost and still create something you'll be proud of, there are two options. The first is to purchase a cheap model airplane kit at a toy store or hobby shop. The second is to put forth a little more time and effort and make one from scratch, using plans found online or in a bookstore. A balsa wood glider is an affordable example, reasonably simple to make and durable.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Download plane model plans off the Internet. Even if you think you can build a model airplane without a plan, it's wise to download one, because your plane will not fly, or even stand stably, if the measurements and symmetry are disproportionate.

    • 2

Cut out the pattern from your model plan, and trace it onto your wood. Cut the pieces out of the wood with a craft knife. Remember to make small slots for the wing pieces and stabilizer.

    • 3

Decorate your plane by using paint, fabric glue, permanent markers, decals or anything else you wish.

    • 4

Launch a test flight of your glider. If it does not fly well, weigh down the front of the plane with a light object such as a dime or safety pins.
