How do I Record the Speed of an RC Model Boat?

Remote controlled (RC) model boats can use gas or electric engines or sails to accelerate through the water. If you are a remote controlled model boat enthusiast, you may be looking for a way to record the speed of your vessels. While recording the speed of a boat is slightly more difficult than recording the speed of a land vehicle, there are several techniques and various tools that can help you accomplish the task at hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the remote control and power on the RC model boat's engine using the "On/Off" switch. Place your RC model boat into a large body of water. Make sure there are no obstructions near the boat or in its direct path.

    • 2

Test the boat's rudders and ability to accelerate and decelerate using the control sticks on the remote. Make sure all of the boat's features are operating correctly.

    • 3

Turn on the radar speed gun using the "On/Off" switch. Test the speed gun on a car, bird, or other moving object in the area. Calibrate the radar gun if needed using the instructions detailed in the user manual.

    • 4

Walk along the side of the body of water, approximately 50 feet away from the boat. Walk far enough so that you can still control the boat with your control and so that the boat can reach full speed by the time it crosses your path.

    • 5

Place the remote control in one hand and the radar gun in the other. Drive the boat past your location so that it is within 50 feet of you at all times. On the final pass, stand still and point the radar gun directly at the boat. Pull the trigger to check the speed. Read the speed gauge on the gun to find the speed of your RC model boat.
