How to Fly a Mini RC Helicopter

Miniature RC helicopters are designed to be flown indoors. They are stable, easy to control and generally ruggedly made. They may come with extra main and tail rotors so that if you damage the original ones in a bad crash, you can quickly swap them out. Mini RC helicopters can be damaged by careless or inexperienced flyers, so you should start slowly and carefully your first time flying.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear out space for your mini RC helicopter. Remove all obstacles from the center of your room to make space to fly. Turn off fans and close windows to prevent drafts from disturbing your flight.

    • 2

Identify the controls on your mini RC helicopter by looking at the package. The simplest mini RC helis have two channels--one to go up and down by pressing the stick forward and backward and the other to go left and right by pressing the stick side to side. These helicopters are balanced to always fly forward and will move in whatever direction you turn them. More complex three channel mini helicopters can go up and down, turn left and right and go forward and backward. Four channel helis have an additional "yaw" control, which allows them to roll side to side.

    • 3

Turn on the helicopter and the control. Place the heli in the middle of the floor and stand a few feet behind it.

    • 4

Slowly increase the throttle until it starts to lift off into the air. When it reaches a foot or two above the floor, decrease the throttle slightly to allow it to land again. Release the throttle.

    • 5

Adjust the trim to compensate for any spin. If your helicopter spun left when it was lifting off, adjust the trim to the right. If it spun right, adjust it to the left.

    • 6

Repeat the trim adjustment steps until the helicopter remains relatively stable with little or no turn when you lift it up. Some mini RC helicopters will turn a bit even if you adjust the trim. For these helicopters, try to minimize the spin as much as possible.

    • 7

Place the helicopter back in the center of the room and increase the throttle until it lifts off. Decrease the throttle slightly to get it to stop at a set height, about a foot above the floor.

    • 8

Hover slowly, and move the helicopter forward and backward while maintaining the hover. If you begin to lose control or get too close to the edge of the room, reduce the throttle to bring the helicopter to rest, put it in the middle of the room and begin again.

    • 9

Practice moving the helicopter in a circle. Hover above the ground, gently move the heli forward and turn the stick to make a gradual loop.

    • 10

Practice doing figure eights. First, turn the helicopter in a circle. When you reach the spot where you began, turn in the opposite direction to complete the loop.
