How to Make a Shelf for a Diecast

Collecting diecast vehicles and collectibles is an excellent and rewarding hobby, and one of the best ways to showcase your collection is to build individual shelving for each piece. Small shelves can be great for highlighting significant pieces, and larger or longer shelves can be useful for displaying sets or dynamic scenes. After making a few shelves, even a novice carpenter will be capable of creating a perfect custom shelf.

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Wood boards

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your boards to fit the diecast items you will be displaying. Your shelving should be at least a half-inch thick, and an inch or two longer than your item on each side for proper display and protection. Sand the rough edges until they are smooth, using a sanding motion that goes with the grain of the wood.

Position the brackets on the shelf board, using at least two brackets for each two feet of shelf. Mark the places for the screws using a pencil. Pre-drill these holes using a drill bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the screws. Drill the brackets to the shelf using screws.

Position the shelf on the wall, making sure it is level using the carpenter's level. Mark the bracket screw holes on the wall using a pencil. Pre-drill these holes with the drill, then attach the shelf to the wall using the screws.
