How to Make a Kid's Car

A young child will enjoy helping to make his very own car from some easily found and inexpensive items. The car can be personalized and the project is great for rainy days or for a birthday party theme. Collect some cardboard boxes, do the basic cutting and spray painting and let the children decorate their cars with paint and stickers for a fun take-home party craft project. Party games and races could also incorporate the cardboard cars.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard box, large enough for a child to sit in
  • Scissors
  • 5 white paper plates
  • Spray paint
  • Construction paper
  • Ribbon
  • Staple gun
  • White glue

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the open-end flaps off the cardboard box.

    • 2

Turn the box over and cut a hole in the bottom of the box that is large enough for the child to fit into.

    • 3

Spray paint the box a bright color, like red or yellow.

    • 4

Staple two pieces of ribbon on the sides of the hole in the box that will comfortably fit over the child's shoulders--the ribbons will hold the box on the child.

    • 5

For the wheels, draw wheel spokes on the paper plates and glue them to the bottom edges of the box.

    • 6

Cut out the center of one paper plate and glue the remaining ring on the front of the box for a steering wheel.

    • 7

Cut circles of construction paper for headlights and taillights and glue to the box. Cut out strips of aluminum foil for a grille and glue them on the box.

    • 8

Tape a toilet paper roll to the back of the car for an exhaust pipe.
