How to Build the Zephyr Toy Rubber Band Car

The Zephyr rubber band racer is a toy vehicle made by a company called Doc Fizzix, who specialize in mousetrap cars and rubber band racers. This particular toy set a speed record, according to the company's product description, of an incredible 5 meters in less than a second! The car is fairly simple to put together, either from a model kit or your own materials (although the kit is the best way to go).

Things You'll Need

  • Doc Fizzix Zephyr rubber band racer kit OR
  • 1/8-inch balsa wood, 3 feet
  • Wood or white glue
  • 4 Eye hooks
  • 2 Dowels
  • 4 Toy wheels
  • Balsa wood plane propeller assembly
  • Small nail and hammer
  • Elastic band

Instructions

    • 1

Unpack the Doc Fizzix kit, or cut out the pieces of wood. Without the kit, you need two 6-inch long side pieces, two 4-inch long front and rear pieces, an 8-inch fuselage, and two 2-inch struts.

    • 2

Lay out the side pieces about 4 inches apart, with the narrow edges facing down. Glue the front and rear pieces across the top of the front and rear of the vehicle to form a rectangular frame. You want a wide, flat surface, so place the flat edges of the front and rear pieces against the sides. Wait a few minutes for the glue to dry.

    • 3

Assemble the axles. Glue or attach one toy wheel to an axle. Repeat with the other axle and another toy wheel.

    • 4

Prepare the axle slots. If you're using the Zephyr kit, these holes will be pre-made. If you're using eye hooks, screw them into place at the front and rear of the car. Screw them into the side pieces of wood, and make sure the front set faces each other, and the rear does the same.

    • 5

Slide the axles into the axle holders, and glue or attach the other wheels. Make sure no glue gets between the wheel and the wood, or the wheels may not turn fluidly.

    • 6

Place the two struts upright and centered on the front piece. Make sure they're about 1/8-inch apart so that the fuselage can fit snugly between them. Leave them for a few minutes to dry.

    • 7

Glue and slide the fuselage between the struts, at first so it's parallel to the base of the car. Then dab some glue at the center of the rear piece, and push just the back of the fuselage down, so it touches and forms about a 30-degree angle.

    • 8

Slip the propeller unit onto the front of the fuselage piece. Make sure the propeller and hook face upwards.

    • 9

Gently tack the nail into the back of the fuselage, also facing upward. Take care not to damage the base of the car.

    • 10

Loop the elastic band around the hook on the propeller, and then around the nail. Turn the propeller to "charge" the engine, and release the propeller to send the car rolling across the floor.
