How to Charge RC Batteries in the Freezer

Remote Controlled (RC) Vehicles can quickly run through the batteries that are used to power them. Most RC vehicles can run on NiMH and Nicad rechargeable batteries. Unlike Alkaline batteries, NiMH and Nicad batteries begin losing losing their charge almost immediately when they are stored at room temperature. Prolong the life of your RC NiMH and Nicad vehicle batteries by storing them in the freezer. If your NiMH and Nicad batteries are not in the charger, freezing them will keep them at 90 percent of their fully charged value for months.

Resealable plastic freezer bag

Freezing RC batteries

  Wrap all of your RC vehicle rechargeable NiMH and Nicad batteries individually in plastic wrap. It is a good idea to individually separate batteries for your convenience in pulling them out later. It also helps by keeping all of your batteries together in one place.

  Slip your NiMH and Nicad RC batteries into a plastic freezer bag. This will prevent moisture from reaching your batteries. Double bag the batteries if you feel this will be an issue in your freezer.

  Place NiMH and Nicad RC batteries in the freezer for storage until you need them.

  Remove the RC vehicle battery from the freezer when you need it, but allow the battery to heat up to room temperature before use.
