How to Make a Gearbox

Gearboxes are the essential movement components of robotic and other moving toys. Gearboxes allow the toys to move in multiple directions and perform multiple functions. While gearboxes can be inexpensive to purchase, for those who wish to make the toy completely theirs, building a gearbox is the only answer.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic or metal gears with small and large gears attached
  • 3"x3" Plexiglass or other glastic (2)
  • Glue (optional)
  • Bolts, at least 2 long bolts

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the smallest gear to the motor shaft. It can be attached with glue if the fit is looser; but if the fit is tight, additional adhesive is not necessary.

    • 2

Connect the Plexiglass to the motor by drilling two holes in the Plexiglass then securing the motor with screws. This provides a flat platform for attaching the gears and should be at a 90-degree angle from the motor shaft.

    • 3

Attach the first gear so that the large gear is snug against the first small gear by drilling a hole for the gear then using a bolt that allows for a free spin with minimal friction. Continue this process until the gears are set as per the project's requirements.

    • 4

Attach the shafts of each of the gears to the second piece of Plexiglass by drilling two holes in that piece to match the first piece. Attach the Plexiglass to the screws holding the first piece up to provide a safe enclosure for the gears.
