How to Drift an RC Car

RC drifting has skyrocketed in popularity. Nowadays, it's nearly impossible to go to the track and not find at least one person experimenting with his first set of slick drift tires. Whatever it is, something about the controlled chaos of drifting has inspired many to try their hand at this stylish technique. If this is your first time at drifting an RC car, then it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with a a basic strategy, which will not only help you learn at a faster pace, but it will also help to prevent any damage to the vehicle during the learning process.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the four tires with enough packing tape to cover the entire surface; any exposed rubber will ruin the drift affect that you're working toward.

    • 2

Using a lighter, lightly lick it over the tape in order to melt any exposed edges; this will ensure a uniform coat that is smooth enough for drifting. Any jagged edges or rips will quickly tear up, so it's very important to make sure you have even coverage.

    • 3

Mount the modified wheels onto your RC chassis. Make sure that none of the tape touches the chassis, and trim back any stray pieces to ensure full clearance.

    • 4

Practice accelerating gradually, to maintain grip as you drive the course. When you come to a turn, prepare to drift.

    • 5

Position the vehicle on the outside of the track, just before the turn. As you approach the curve, pull in toward the center, which will swing out your tail end.

    • 6

Open the throttle wide as the car starts to drift sideways around the turn. Control the direction of the drift with the front wheels, using the throttle to manipulate the projectile curvature of the car; eventually, you'll launch your car into perfect drifts that require very little adjustment.
