Power Wheels Battery Instructions

Power Wheels are battery-powered ride-on toy vehicles manufactured by Fisher Price for toddlers and older children. The vehicles typically run on a 6- or 12-volt battery that must be recharged after use. Proper battery selection for your model, installation, charging, care and disposal of your Power Wheels battery is essential in getting the most out of your product.
  1. Battery Installation

    • Check the owner̵7;s manual for your particular Power Wheels model to ensure that you are using the proper voltage. Using a battery other than the specific model designed to work with your toy will result in damage to the vehicle, according to Fisher-Price.com.

Lift the hood or other battery compartment on the Power Wheels toy and locate the motor harness connector. This connector will be a plastic clip located at the end of a wire. Lift the connector cord out of the way and slide the battery into the area where it is to be installed. On most models there is a molded cutout that is approximately the same size as the battery with a safety latch (battery retainer) to prevent shifting during use.

Slide the motor harness connector into the opening on the side of the battery. You must make sure the connector is lined up by inserting the positive and negative terminals into the battery correctly. There will be a ̶0;+̶1; sign and a ̶0;-̶0; sign to indicate the proper installation on the connector and the battery.

    Battery Charging

    • Prepare the battery for its first use by plugging it into the charger for at least 18 hours before connecting it to the vehicle. The battery should charge 14 hours after the first use and should never be left on the charger for more than 30 hours at a time. Recharging the battery once per month, even if the vehicle is not used, will prolong the life of the battery.

The charger clip plugs into the battery in the same way the motor harness connector does. Make sure the positive and negative symbols line up properly. Plug the charger into an electrical outlet. A light will come on to indicate the charger is sending power to the battery.

    Care and Disposal

    • Keep your battery upright when charging and never allow the battery to run completely out of energy, according to the Power Wheels Owner̵7;s Manual. Leaving a battery in a discharged state will damage the battery and shorten its life span.

Store your battery in a safe place with climate control. Remember that the battery has acid inside that can leak out and damage surfaces, so do not store the battery on a kitchen counter or other furniture that may be ruined if the battery leaks. Do not store the battery in temperatures above 75 degrees or below -10 degrees.

When it is time to dispose of your Power Wheels battery, do not put it in your normal household trash. There are laws against sealed lead-acid batteries being put in with general household trash and into landfills. Call the Power Wheels authorized service center at (800) 348-0751 to find out where you can properly dispose of your battery.
