Things You'll Need
Instructions
Invest in a diecast collector's guide and familiarize yourself with the different varieties, scales and companies that produce diecast trucks for collectors. Knowledge of the different types of collectibles available to you will give you a leg up when starting your collection.
Determine where to start your collection. You can start with one company's collectibles and begin hunting down trucks in series and by scale. Some companies, such as the Hess truck collectibles, are made available during the holidays, but you may be able to purchase previous models from hobby shops and antique dealers.
Build your collection at a speed that suits your budget. Many collectors thrive on the excitement of new finds for their collections, but often overspend to add new models to their collections. Setting up a budget allotment for your collection will offer you a modicum of self-control and assist you in gradually growing your collection.
Join a collector's group in your area to share the excitement of collecting and to learn more about growing your collection. Collector's groups often trade duplicate models and put you in touch with shops and bargains you might not otherwise learn about on your own.
Visit local toy fairs where you can find good deals on pieces to add to your collection and meet other collectors.
Inform friends and family about your collection so they can help you add to it with gifts around the holidays and for your birthday. The more they know about your collection, the easier it will be for them to buy the perfect gift to enhance it.
Showcase your collection. If you are planning on becoming an avid collector, you will need to set aside a special place in your home to showcase your collection. You can purchase special cases by scale in most hobby shops and craft stores that will keep your diecast truck models dust- and residue-free, while still showing off their features to friends and other enthusiasts.
